Recruiting Roundup: NSCLA Champions Cup at University of Delaware
LONG ISLAND EXPRESS 2014'SIndividually, this is a team that is pretty special. I still think that they're developing chemistry together (unlike other areas, these guys are still finishing up school) and will be awesome 2-3 weeks from now. The Express 2014's, headed by longtime Chaminade head honcho Jack Moran, were without Sam Bonafede (IL's No. 4 Young Gun Sophomore) as well as some other standouts. Attackman Patrick McCormick (Hicksville HS/North Carolina) was banged up for half of the tournament as well.
At attack, Ian Kirby (Massapequa HS/Towson) showed some great promise and worked well within the offense, I love his shot in particular. Kieran Byrnes (Garden City HS) and Brendan Kavanagh (Kellenberg Memorial) were two more guys that are legit prospects. I had discussion with one Big East coach at the field who said that less than ideal size works well for some attackmen depending on their style - that's the case for Kavanagh, whose older brother will head to Notre Dame in the fall. On the midfield, I was extremely impressed with Sean Cerrone (Chaminade/Villanova), who was efficient on FO's and did a great job getting by his man and dishing or shooting. The Flyers' midfield will be very scary next year with Cerrone, Bonafede and IL's No. 2 sophomore Carney Mahon. J.T. Caputo (St. Anthony's) was another middie that I liked a lot but will have to touch up his IQ a little bit, otherwise he's a surefire Division I recruit.
Defensively, I was a fan of Andrew Nadjari (St. Anthony's), Matthew Wysota (Chaminade) and Joseph Hussey (St. Anthony's). Nadjari is a definite Ivy kid and was an impressive prospect in many ways. Wysota was outstanding and pesky when the ball was on the ground, while Hussey was just rock solid and didn't have one quality that set him over the edge. At LSM, rising sophomore Malcolm Flynn (Half Hollow Hills West HS) flew all over the field and possessed awesome stick skills. I imagine he'll be a great catch for any top Division I school that snatches him up. In goal, both Matt Isnardi (Chaminade) and Ryan Toomey (Hicksville HS) had nice weekends, with Toomey maybe having the better go when I saw them, allowing just one goal.
